Titled, “Nicotine in tobacco product aerosols: ‘It’s déjà vu all over again’”, the study was published in BMJ’s Tobacco Control last week. The study pointed out that the formulation of Juul’s nicotine-containing aerosol was designed in a way to make it easier for users to inhale larger quantities of nicotine, without gagging, gasping, coughing and noticing its strength.
“It becomes obvious why novice users, people who’ve never smoked before, find it easy to try Juul,” said study author David Peyton. “And once you try it, you’re getting dosed with a high concentration of nicotine.”
About Nicotine Salts
Directly comparing Juul vaping devices to Marlboro cigarettes, the researchers analyzed the nature and amount of the nicotine in Juul’s pods. Besides making “nicotine salts” popular, by adding organic acids to liquid nicotine, Juul was able to reduce the amount of “freebase nicotine” in the aerosol that users inhale. Freebase nicotine was common in e-liquids and was harder and harsher to inhale. With the addition of the acids Juul managed to Juul to eliminate the harsh side effects.
“The design evolution for e-cigarettes has made them more effective as substitutes to get smokers off combustibles. However, this evolution has likely made e-cigarette products vastly more addictive for never-smokers.”Study Abstract

Why Juul is excellent for smoking cessation
Other recent findings by a study from Penn State College of Medicine researchers, have also pointed out that the Juul device delivers nicotine at a faster rate and in a more effective manner, than most other vaping products. “The JUUL users we studied obtained blood nicotine concentrations almost three times as high as most of the e-cigarette users we previously studied,” said lead study author Jessica Yingst. “JUUL’s nicotine delivery is very similar to that of cigarettes.”
However, the latter have rightly pointed out that the high level of nicotine and effectivity of its delivery in Juul, holds an advantage for smokers seeking to quit by switching to a safer alternative. The researchers concluded that while the highly addictive nature of the devices makes them a threat to non-smokers, being effective smoking cessation tools for existing smokers, poses a dilemma for public health.
“This type of product is likely addictive and is attractive to teenagers. But those same qualities that make it addictive may enable it to help adult smokers switch to a much less harmful form of nicotine consumption.”
“In previous work, we determined that JUUL delivered lower levels of some harmful chemicals than cigarettes and even some other e-cigarettes,” added John Richie, PhD, co-author of the study and professor of public health sciences at the College of Medicine.
